Welcome to Gwynedd Bat Group

The Gwynedd Bat Group is a registered charity working to promote bat conservation in North West Wales. We are a small network of volunteers in Anglesey, Gwynedd and western Conwy, including the Snowdonia National Park. We undertake surveys and monitoring of local bat populations and can provide information and advice on bats and bat conservation locally.

  • If you need information or general advice on bats or bat conservation please contact the group or go to the BCT website
  • If you have found a grounded or injured bat and need urgent advice go to the BCT website or ring the Bat Helpline on 0845 1300 228
  • If you are interested in joining the group please contact us for more information or download the membership form here.
  • If you are seeking advice in relation to developments or alterations to buildings etc., please contact your local office of the Countryside Council for Wales or the enquiries line 0845 1306 229. More information can be found on the Bat Conservation Trust website.

Gwynedd bat group is a small, friendly society dedicated to helping bat conservation in North Wales. We hold monthly meetings (usually in pubs with their own roost!), organise training sessions and visit roost and hibernation sites.
Bats are increasingly under pressure from an ever changing environment and monitoring and advising on their presence is crucially important for their survival.
We are lucky to have the three biggest roosts of pipistrelles in Wales on our patch, with over 1,000 bats at each, these are some of the biggest in Britain. If you’d like to join us in monitoring these and other roosts, and discovering other sites, or just simply supporting our work please contact us.
These species can be found in our area:

Common pipistrelle
Soprano pipistrelle
Brown long-eared bat
Pipistrellus pipistrellus
Pipistrellus pygmaeus
Plecotus auritus
The three most common species. Very dependent on buildings
Nathusius pipistrelle Pipistrellus nathusii
Known only from one or two bat detector records, this species may have been overlooked.
Noctule Nyctalus noctula
Mainly roosts in tree-holes. Quite common
Natterer’s bat
Whiskered bat
Brandt’s bat
Daubenton’s bat

Myotis nattereri
Myotis mystacinus
Myotis brandtii
Myotis daubentonii
The members of this closely related group may be more numerous in Wales than in much of Britain. Not uncommon. Daubenton’s may be less dependent on buildings than others.
Greater horseshoe bat Rhinolophus ferrumequinum
A very rare species with only a few individuals recorded in north Wales.
Lesser horseshoe bat Rhinolophus hipposideros
A rare species that has its stronghold in Wales and has core populations in north west Wales.
Barbastelle Barbastella barbastellus

A very rare tree-roosting bat. It has been recorded in north west Wales, but no roosts have been found yet.
